This is absolutely one of the most charming and stunning gem of the whole Amalfi Coast. It’s, indeed, not as famous as other close towns such as Positano or Amalfi, but this turns out to be an advantage rather than a failure. Located at the east of Amalfi, the town is yet the smallest community in Italy, with a population of approximately 910 people.
Atrani is nestled between two hills, lying along the valley of the Dragone river, so called because of a legend claiming the existence of a terrible dragon that once used to hide in the inland.
Even if the first reported inhabitants of Atrani are the ancient Roman aristocracy who built their luxurious mansions on the famous cliffs, the real origins of the settlement are still unknown.
Today Atrani still keeps untouched its fishermen atmosphere and it’s considered one of the most relaxing places to have a drink or to have dinner in a pleasant and peaceful way. The beauty of its gardens, squares and of its characteristic stairs attracts hips of travelers and many directors of films. The town is immune to traffic because the vehicles cannot circulate throughout the narrow and steep streets: the main square leads straight to the banks though an old pathway built in order to protect boats from storms. Right behind the beach there are the colorful, old-fashioned houses that characterize the landscape and that expose their amazing lemon terraces.
A breathtaking reality to know, a lovely place to be: visit Atrani and you will not be disappointed.
